Checklist Before Moving

Before You Leave

Address Change

  • Post Office: Give forwarding address
  • Charge accounts, credit cards, bank
  • Subscriptions: Notice requires several weeks
  • Friends and relatives

Bank

  • Transfer bank funds; arrange check cashing in new location
  • Obtain cashier's check necessary for closing real estate transaction
  • Arrange credit references
  • Arrange for a debit card.

Insurance

  • Notify insurance company of new location for coverage's life, health, fire, auto and personal property

Utility

  • Stop service for gas, water, and telephone.  Arrange for starting of new service at new home.  

Delivery Service

  • Stop or change delivery services:  laundry, milk, newspaper

Medical, Dental, Prescription Histories

  • Ask doctor and dentist for referrals and check with your new insurance company for names of doctors and dentist covered.  Know were the closest emergency hospital is.  Transfer needed  prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays.  Obtain birth records, medical records etc.

Pets

  • Ask about regulations for pet licenses, vaccinations, tags etc.  If you plan on traveling by commercial airplane, check with the airline for their requirements.  You may need to provide a recent health certificate for each pet.

Don't forget to...

  • Empty freezer; plan use of foods
  • Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator.  Place charcoal to dispel odors
  • Have appliances serviced for moving
  • Remember arrangements for TV and antenna
  • Clean rugs or clothing before moving, have them wrapped
  • Pick up dry-cleaning before movers arrive
  • Check with your moving specialist about insurance coverage , packing/unpacking, labor arrival day, various shipping papers; method and time of expected payment; plan for special care needs of children or pets
  • Change or adjust cell phone service to include your new destination and your travel to the new destination.
  • Arrange for post office or REALTOR to hold all you mail until you arrive.
  • Register children at new school.  Locate or call pediatrician for immunization records for each child.

On Moving Day...

  • Carry enough cash or traveler's checks to cover cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in new location.
  • Carry jewelry and documents yourself.
  • Plan for transporting pets.
  • Carry a debit card with your new bank.  Make sure it is activated and you know your password in advance
  • Let close friends or relative know your route and schedule, including overnight stops.  
  • Make sure you have cell phone, car charger and wall mount charger.
  • Double-check closets, attic, drawers, shelves to be sure they are empty
  • Leave all old keys and garage door openers, needed by new owner or tenant with REALTOR.

When You Get There...

  • Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and cable
  • Check pilot light on stove, hot water and furnace
  • Have appliances checked
  • Ask mailman for mail he may be holding for your arrival.
  • Change address on Driver's license.
  • Visit city offices and register to vote
  • Register cars within five days after arrival in state or penalty may have to be paid when getting new license plates
  • Transfer motor club membership
  • Apply for state driver's license
  • Register family in your new place of worship
  • Arrange for medical services: doctor, dentist, etc
