History of Colorado Springs
| 1871 marked the beginning for Colorado Springs as a bustling
city, when General William Jackson Palmer approved construction on the first
business in the area known as downtown Colorado Springs. General
William Jackson Palmer was a Pennsylvania born civil war veteran who in his
travels with the railroad fell in love with southeastern |
 |
| Colorado. In 1867 the Union Pacific
Railroad sent General Palmer and a survey crew to find the best route for
the California to Kansas line. General Palmer bought 10,000
acres for $1.25 per acre during one of his survey trips in what is now Colorado Springs.
When General Palmers laid out his master plan for Colorado Springs, he envisioned the city to have the
charm and elegance like his home town London, England. The charm and
elegance of London but with the incredible mountains, bright sky and rich
landscape that Colorado boasts. Millionaire business men and
philanthropists like Spenser Penrose, Charles Tutt and Winfield Scott
Stratton also made their homes in Colorado Springs.
Downtown Colorado Springs was a few miles east of "Old
Colorado City" where hard working and hard playing miner's and miller's
lived and played. "Old Colorado" flourished as it was the
base town for Pikes Peak. The road to the gold mines passed through
"Old Colorado City". |
In 1870 General William Jackson Palmer wrote to his wife,
"Could one live in constant view of these grand mountains without
being elevated by them into a lofty plane of thought and
purpose?" Mary Lincoln Mellen, known as Queen, was General
Palmer wife for whom he built Glen Eyrie castle for. She was the queen
of his heart, and it was his dream to build a beautiful stone castle for his
bride. The General and Queen settled in the area and had three
daughters, Elsie, Dorothy and Marjory. |
| In 1904 construction on the castle began in the footprint of
the old house of 22 rooms. The stones for the exterior are from the
Bear Creek area, and the window casings and doorways are of Indiana
limestone shipped by train. |
 |
Queen died before the castle was finished, but the General continued on
the construction as he had promised her in life.
As Colorado Springs grew, General Palmer kept a close eye
on his town, making sure it was kept clean and his citizens maintained an
upright character.
Gold was discovered in Cripple Creek in 1891, and Colorado Springs soon
became a favorite banking spot for the rags to riches gold mine owners and
workers. Extravagant homes were built in what was known then as,
"Millionaires Row". Many of the homes exist still today and have been
lavishly maintained. With the gold rush came other companies to
support the needs of the growing city. The city prospered from the
wealth in the form of parks, buildings, hotels and homes.
During World War II, Colorado Springs sold a large amount of land just south
of the city to the US Army, now known as Fort Carson. Established as a
training facility for the military. In the 1950's the Air Force
Academy was established to train and educate Air Force officers. Now
Colorado Springs is home to Shriver Air Force base, Peterson Air Force base,
Falcon Air Force base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force base. Cheyenne
Mountain Air Force base is home to NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command. |
